KS3 Computing News

This half term sees KS3 Computing being a little creative and learning some basics in Information Technology.  In year 7, the students have been learning all about spreadsheets and are in the process of creating a spreadsheet for a specific scenario that needs to include a range of formulas and charts. The students are doing this independently and are using the skills taught in the previous lessons to do this.

Year 8 are in the process of designing their own music festival and have planned a website to promote this music festival. The students will be incorporating a variety of features into their websites, including scrolling text, videos and slideshows. We will be investigating the programming language, HTML that sits behind the websites and looking at challenging the girls to write some HTML codes to help produce their websites.

Year 9 are learning about media and have looked at some of the theory behind films. They have looked at a range of audiences and purposes and are also learning about different narrative structures and character types. They are now working in groups to plan a film trailer for a teenage audience with a purpose of escapism. The students have started to produce their scripts and are filming within the next few weeks. They will then work on sounds for the trailer for their finished product. I am looking forward to seeing what the students produce as there are some interesting ideas!

Year 7/8/9 KS3 British Science Week / School Winners / STEM Fortnight

Last term, as part of STEM fortnight, KS3 pupils worked hard to create a series of informative posters for British Science Week.  This year’s theme was based on ‘growth’ and there was strong competition from all year groups.  Well done to everyone who entered their designs.  Here are the PGHS winners:

UCLAN – Private View Saturday Club Exhibition

Last term, I had the privilege to see some of our talented young artists professionally exhibit their work as part of the UCLAN Saturday Art Club.  The Saturday Club was about developing inspirational artists and giving students an opportunity to be inventive, creative and to develop their ideas.

Lubaina Himid CBE, officially opened the event and it was a delight to see all the hard work of pupils from the local community.  Below are some pictures from the exhibition.  Well done to everyone who took part!

Year 9 Smart Law Magistrates’ Mock Trial Competition

On Friday 29th April, a team of year 9 students competed in the Magistrates’ Mock Trial Competition run by Smart Law, a programme organised by Young Citizens. The competition was the result of weeks of preparation by the students who took on the all the roles of the court: magistrates, lawyers, witnesses, court adviser and usher. The defendant in the case was accused of setting up a fake Instagram account, using it to post derogatory images and messages about the claimant. In the lead up to the competition there were some lively lunch time debates regarding the guilt of the defendant and the credibility of the witnesses and their statements. PGHS competed against five other North West schools in the virtual trial, with each student performance given a score out of ten by the judges.

In both rounds of the competition the students performed superbly, however, the team narrowly missed out on lifting the trophy by just one point! The students represented the school exceptionally well and quickly adapted to the virtual format, and the inevitable technical issues. As part of their preparations for the competition, the team were provided with expert coaching from Jack Troup, a Barrister working at the 15 Winckley Square Chambers. The students were provided with an opportunity to question the judges on how to pursue a career in law. The team are now looking forward to competing in the Bar Mock Trials next year and have their sights on victory!

Using Hellosmart.com to increase interactive activities using Science department IT resources

Over several months the Science department have been developing their skills in using “Hellosmart.com”, a programme that allows greater interaction and provides instant feedback on students’ progress.  Having an increasing number of computers within the department, it has been pleasing to see students enjoying accessing the materials that we have been producing to aid their learning. Students can access Hellosmart.com as soon as they enter the room….

Then complete a word search to develop a familiarity with the vocabulary relating to the lesson as students wait for other classmates to log on.

Confident and less confident students have contributed to class discussions using the ‘shout it out’ activities.

All students have enjoyed working collaboratively with others.

“Hellosmart.com” has been beneficial for monitoring progress as students’ work on interactive tasks that can be viewed by the teacher. Good examples of work can be shared with the rest of the group.

As a department, we look forward to using “Hellosmart.com” further, with our students both in class and remotely.

Time Distance Graphs

As part of the 10 Big Ideas Unit Forces 2, Year 8 have spent several lessons getting to know how to calculate speed using an equation. They have also described and completed distance-time graphs using Super Mario characters and a variety of journeys. They have completed a composite task to demonstrate that they know and remember how to do this. To provide an element of challenge, students were asked to describe their own journey. They plotted this in a distance-time graph and some of them even calculated the speed at each part of the journey. Here are a few from 8SC3:

Robotics Challenge

On the 21st April, a group of Year 8 and 9 students from STEM club, were invited to take part in a regional heat for the 2022 Tomorrow’s Engineers Robotics Challenge. It was held at Preston’s College iSTEM building and hosted by some amazing STEM ambassadors that were on hand to help and advise our students.

We have been working on the challenge for a number of months. There are many different tasks involved. The students have to build and programme a Lego robot to perform numerous challenges. These include a speed challenge, a ramp challenge and even a challenge following coloured lines to collect objects.

The students were amazing at rising to the occasion and programming the robot, even adapting the code when it didn’t quite work out. Check out the video of our robot on our twitter page!

Another big part of the day is the blind teamwork challenge. The students were challenged with creating the slowest marble run out of 4 paper plates, 4 paper cups, 1 roll of masking tape and 1 pair of scissors. Their design was innovative and well constructed. This lead to them winning this particular section and winning the trophy.

Sadly, on the day, we were not able to become overall winners, but had a great time and received some good feedback from the judges. The students showed incredible resilience and determination to complete the challenges set.

Great work, STEM Club!

James Webb Telescope

On the 11th March 2022, the 18 segments of the mirror were aligned and there are now high expectations from NASA that the telescope is going to be able to perform better than projected.

An image was taken to test the mirror alignment, and the focus of the image was the bright star in the centre. Because the telescope is so sensitive, distant galaxies and stars can be seen in the background.

On the 7th April 2022, one of the instruments on the telescope, the Mid-infrared instrument (MIRI), had to reach its final operating temperature of -266 °C. This low temperature is needed because all of the instruments on the Webb telescope detect infrared light which is emitted by warm objects including the telescope. So the MIRI and the other instruments on the telescope have to be cooled so they do not emit infrared radiation.
