resultsday1.jpgThis year’s GCSE Results Day was a celebration like no other, but no less enjoyable.  It was lovely to re-unite with the Class of 2020 and to see that they got the grades they truly deserved. Once again, Penwortham Girls’ High School can reflect on another year of outstanding academic achievement.  Most importantly, every girl can now look forward to the next stage of their journey and we wish them every success for the future.

Looking back, we may only have had half a normal school year yet PGHS achieved so much in that time.  The school was delighted to be awarded the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award at Bronze level.  A result of impressive collaboration between teachers and students, the school council will now work towards achieving the Silver level by working on a school ‘Learning Charter’ and developing students’ awareness of a range of global issues including fair trade and equal access to education.  We were equally pleased to add the Socio-Economic equality strand of the Equality Charter, recognising our efforts to give every student, regardless of their background, the opportunity to be successful and thrive.

Another hard-earned accolade came later in the year when we managed to achieve all 8 of the Gatsby Benchmarks, recognising the considerable time, energy and financial investment that the school has made in recent years to ensure that every student at PGHS gets outstanding careers guidance, as well as opportunities to learn about the world of work and prepare for their future.

A real highlight was our annual celebration of International Women’s Day.  A range of high profile, successful women including Detective Chief Superintendent Sue Clarke, and our former headteacher, Joan Fitzgibbon came into school and through talks and Q&A sessions, inspired our girls to pursue their ambitions.

Like all schools in recent times, although we may have had far fewer students coming in every day, the work continued apace.  Staff from the Creative Arts and Technology Faculty, along with several of our students, worked tirelessly during the lockdown period to produce much-needed PPE, including visors made from recycled coursework folders.  Over 1000 visors were eventually made and delivered to local hospitals and care homes.  In recognition of this amazing effort we received official thanks from the Speaker of the House of Commons and MP for Chorley, Sir Lindsay Hoyle as well as MP for South Ribble, Katherine Fletcher.

We also have to pay tribute to the dedication and unstinting efforts of our Premises team, who during this period have overseen the extensive refurbishment of an entire block and its seven classrooms, ready for our students when they return in September.  Moreover, our Technology rooms have undergone further modernisation, ensuring that our students enjoy superb facilities that support first-class teaching and learning.

And regardless of the circumstances, we remain as excited as ever about the future.  As an over-subscribed school about to welcome our Year 7 students, we will shortly be adding new classrooms to our fantastic facilities, providing airy, well-equipped learning environments for our newly recruited specialist teachers.
