Pupil Premium

Information for Parents and Carers

At Penwortham Girls’ High School, we are committed to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. The Pupil Premium is additional government funding provided to schools to help support students who may face barriers to learning, including those that affect attendance, engagement, and progress.

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is funding given to schools each academic year, in addition to main school funding. Our first priority in using this funding is to support high-quality teaching in the classroom, ensuring that all students benefit from excellent teaching every day.

The funding is used to:

  • Support high-quality teaching first
  • Strengthen foundation skills in literacy and numeracy
  • Improve attainment and progress
  • Reduce gaps in achievement between students
  • Support attendance, engagement, and wellbeing
  • Ensure all students can benefit fully from school life

Who is Eligible for Pupil Premium?

Your daughter may be eligible for Pupil Premium funding if she meets one or more of the following criteria:

Free School Meals

Students who are currently eligible for free school meals, or have been eligible at any point during the last six years.

  • Funding received by the school: £1,075 per student

Pupil Premium Plus (Previously Looked After Children)

Students who have left Local Authority care through:

  • Adoption
  • A Special Guardianship Order
  • A Child Arrangements Order
  • A Residence Order

From 1 April 2023, this also includes children adopted from state care or equivalent outside England and Wales.

  • Funding received by the school: £2,630 per student

This higher level of funding recognises the additional challenges some of these students may experience.

Service Premium (Children of Armed Forces Families)

Students are eligible if:

  • One parent is currently serving in the regular armed forces
  • One parent has served in the regular armed forces within the last three years
  • A parent died while serving, and the student receives a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) or War Pensions Scheme (WPS)
  • Funding received by the school: £350 per student

How Do We Use Pupil Premium Funding?

Pupil Premium funding at Penwortham Girls’ High School is carefully planned and targeted, with a clear focus on quality teaching first, alongside additional support where needed. This may include:

  • High-quality teaching and learning in every classroom
  • Targeted support to develop literacy and numeracy skills
  • Staff training and professional development
  • Academic intervention and personalised support
  • Pastoral care, mentoring, and wellbeing support
  • Attendance monitoring and early support where concerns arise
  • Support for access to enrichment activities and school opportunities

The impact of this support is reviewed regularly to ensure it meets students’ needs and makes a positive difference.
