Preston Photography School Exhibition 2023

This year, our school has been invited to to be part of the Lancashire Photography Festival and as part of this event, there will be a free photography exhibition held at Penwortham Girls.

Launching in Preston in June 2023, Lancashire Photography Festival will be the UK’s largest outdoor photography festival with hundreds of images on display by some of the world’s leading photographers.

As part of the engagement program, we would like to get as many budding photographers involved as possible.  So, as part of this, the Arts Council England have fully funded the project so that these photography exhibitions can been seen in school free of charge.

Over the Summer term there will be 20 A3-size images displayed in school to coincide with the Festival of Performance and Arts.  We will be exhibiting  ‘Winners! – award-winning images from Preston Photographic Society.’

Lancashire Photography Festival takes place from June to September.  More information about the festival can be found at https://enjoyshow.co.uk/lancashire-photography-festival/

Year 10 Photography Students create Cyanotypes

As part of our GCSE Photography coursework, students have been learning about non-camera photography and have been researching the work of botanist Anna Atkins and Man Ray’s extensive range of photograms.  Using pressed natural forms and acetate negatives, we have been experimenting with the process of cyanotypes.

Here are some examples of our work so far:

Blue Planet Aquarium Year 7 Visit 2023

On the 3rd March 2023, to celebrate STEM fortnight, we invited all of Year 7 to join us at the Blue Planet Aquarium.  This educational experience included classroom workshops, diver talks and the opportunity to view a range of marine forms in preparation for our Art & Design Unit 2 Sculpture Project (Coral Reef).

Throughout the day, students were able to participate in a wide range of activities, looking at textures and learning about the biodiversity in our precious Coral Reef habitats.  Environmental issues were also discussed and students explored ways of protecting our marine areas.

It is aimed that over the following months, Year 7 will use this visit as a useful reference source for observational drawing and textural clay sculptures.  We look forward to sharing examples of our student’s work later this academic year.

Feature Artist: Sarah Graham

As part of the Year 7 Art Scheme of Learning, we have covered the work of Sarah Graham and her hyper-realistic approach to oil painting.

Sarah Graham is a British painter and has exhibited at independent galleries and art fairs across the UK and overseas.

Sarah often uses bright and vivid subject matter such as lollipops, confectionary and toys to create her beautiful canvases.  Embracing technology, she often records her paintings using time-lapse photography.

These fascinating videos are available to watch online:

Feature Artist: Irving Penn

This term, our ‘Feature Artist’ is internationally renowned photographer, Irving Penn. Irving Penn was one of the twentieth century’s great photographers, known for his arresting images and his masterful coverage of multiple genres.

At a time when photography was primarily understood as a means of communication, he approached it with an artist’s eye and expanded the creative potential of the medium, both in his professional and personal work.

The Irving Penn Foundation houses the largest repository of Irving Penn’s work and was established to promote knowledge and understanding of the artistic legacy of Irving Penn, including the diversity of techniques, mediums and subject matter that the artist explored.  Visit www.irvingpenn.org for more information.
