Teaching School

Penwortham Girls' High School became a Teaching School in 2015. Recognising our size and the considerable demands associated with teaching school status, we took the decision to team up with Bishop Rawstorne to create the Red Rose TSA. We have now been working in close partnership with Bishop Rawstorne for the past 6 years, providing a range of services and opportunities to our alliance members and partner secondaries from across Lancashire. In 2020, the government unveiled a new direction for Teaching Schools, with smaller local alliances (such as, the Red Rose TSA) being replaced with regional hubs. Exactly, how PGHS fits into this new model remains unclear. However, we remain hopeful that we will be able to continue to work in close collaboration with other leading secondaries and our existing alliance partners in the future.

As a Teaching School, we have been required to meet three key performance indicators each year:

1. Initial Teacher Training – We have been strategic partners in the Bishop Rawstorne School Direct programme, both hosting ITT trainees and contributing to the conference day calendar. PGHS has led on the provision of pedagogy and curriculum related training.

2. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – We have provided a range of training opportunities to local schools, including: the hosting of exam board network meetings, leading NQT events as part of the Lancashire support programme, offering subject specific courses and conferences, and providing trainers to facilitate INSET within partner schools.

3. School to School Support – A number of staff, from across a range of subjects, have been credited as SLEs (Specialist Leaders in Education) and Karen Pomeroy is an NLE (National Leader in Education). These staff members provide support in their areas of specialism to partner schools. Support packages vary from multi-year action plans to single day visits. Since becoming a Teaching School, PGHS staff have provided support to over 40 secondaries from across the North West.
