PGHS Enjoys Yet More Success

Students at Penwortham Girls’ High School have achieved another staggering set of GCSE results, proving once again that this is a truly outstanding school with an amazing track record of ensuring that girls of all abilities and aptitudes make exceptional academic progress. Over 90% of girls achieved the key benchmark of a grade 4 or higher in both English and mathematics, with almost 40% achieving the ‘gold standard’ of a grade 5 or higher across the EBacc suite of academic subjects. In addition, a huge number of A*/A grades were achieved by so many girls across the full range of subjects, from Separate Sciences to Geography, and from RE to Music.

This year we have produced the best set of school results ever, achieving a Progress 8 score of +0.66. Progress 8 is based on pupils’ performance in eight qualifications, including English and Maths. The average Progress 8 score of all secondary schools nationally is 0. A score of +0.5 or above shows that pupils in that school are achieving ‘half a grade higher’ in each qualification than other similar pupils nationally.

This means that pupils at Penwortham Girls’ High School made exceptional progress across all subjects, confirming again our status as an outstanding school.

There were some incredible individual achievements too, with Lauren Hall attaining an incredible 3 grade 9s and the rest A*, one of only 2000 students nationally to do so. Alongside her were another 13 girls who achieved 8 or more 7+ or A*/A grades, including Head Girl Hannah Thomas and Deputy Head Girl Charlotte Daley, alongside Olivia Christopher, Tannith-Jade Cole, Madeleine Cooper, Alisha Solanki, Amy Whitehouse, Zainab Chaudhry, Aadila Darsot, Khadeejah Desai, Amanda Hacking, Shifa Hussain, Erin McLernon and Rebecca Wilson. PGHS staff were equally delighted about the enormous numbers of students who made fantastic progress from their starting points, including Farkhanda Iqbal who achieved a phenomenal two grades higher than her target across all her subjects.

This year’s results were particularly gratifying considering that the new English and mathematics exams have been made much so much harder, but the culture of high expectations combined with a ‘can-do’ attitude that permeates PGHS, ensured that staff and students worked together to overcome these challenges in spectacular fashion.

Headteacher Karen Pomeroy was ‘ecstatic’, noting that ‘these superb results demonstrate beyond doubt that PGHS is a place where girls can and will excel, regardless of their individual starting points. Our specialist teachers know exactly how to get the best out of all our students, providing not just fascinating lessons but high-quality pastoral care too. Of course, we also rely on the unstinting support of parents and they deserve special credit.’

These impressive GCSE results round off another great year for Penwortham Girls’ High School. As an increasingly oversubscribed school, there has been an ongoing programme of intensive capital investment to develop and expand the school’s facilities, including the recent opening of two new Science laboratories and a completely re-furbished Technology suite. September 2017 will also see the opening of the newly-built PGHS Teaching School Training Suite, providing PGHS staff, many of whom are now Specialist Leaders in Education, with a bespoke venue for training teachers from schools all over the North West.

Finally, teachers at PGHS were delighted to be given the seal of approval from parents in the most recent Kirkland Rowell survey. The school was given an Outstanding grade in every category, including personal development, welfare and safety, as well as academic outcomes. In the report, parents spoke highly of the personalised care and guidance that their daughters received with the overwhelming majority of Year 7 parents believing that PGHS had surpassed their expectations.
