Do You Have a Young Carer in Your Family?
At our school, we are committed to supporting all students to achieve their full potential. We recognise that some children and young people may have additional responsibilities at home because they help care for a family member. These students are known as Young Carers.
A Young Carer is someone under the age of 18 who helps to look after a parent, sibling, grandparent or other family member who may have a disability, long-term illness, mental health condition, or issues with substance misuse. Their caring role may include helping with household tasks, providing emotional support, looking after younger siblings, or assisting with personal care.
Many young people do not realise that they are Young Carers, and families may not always see themselves in this role. However, caring responsibilities can sometimes affect a child’s wellbeing, attendance, friendships, homework, or confidence at school.
By identifying Young Carers, we can ensure that appropriate support is available.
This may include:
• A trusted member of staff to talk to
• Additional pastoral support
• Understanding around homework or deadlines when appropriate
• Access to Young Carer services and activities
• Opportunities to meet other Young Carers
If you believe your child may be a Young Carer, or if you would like to discuss your family’s circumstances in confidence, please contact Mrs Arrowsmith (DSL) at c.arrowsmith@penworthamgirls.lancs.sch.uk
Any information shared will be treated sensitively and will help us to provide the best possible support for your child.
Together, we can ensure that every young person receives the recognition, understanding and support they deserve.
Thank you for your help in identifying and supporting Young Carers within our school community.
