Year 7 Visit Dairy Farm to Learn Where Milk Really Comes From

Our Year 7 students enjoyed an exciting and educational trip to a Lancashire Teaching Farm in Leyland, where they learned all about where milk comes from and just how much care goes into producing it.

The day began with a tour of the farm, where students saw first-hand how cows are looked after. They learned about the importance of animal welfare, from clean bedding and regular feeding to plenty of space. Many students were surprised to discover how much work goes into keeping cows healthy and happy.

The farmers also explained why looking after the soil is just as important as looking after the animals. Healthy soil means better grass, which means better feed for the cows and that leads to better-quality milk. Students explored the idea of sustainability and how farms are working to protect the environment while producing the food that we rely on.

Finally, the group learned how milk is collected, cooled and processed before it reaches supermarket shelves. Seeing the journey from cow to carton helped students gain a better understanding of the entire food production process.

“It made me realise how much goes on behind the scenes,” said one student. “I’ll definitely think more about where my food comes from now!”

The trip was a valuable reminder that even a simple glass of milk has a story behind it — one that involves care, science and sustainability.
