This term, our talented Year 7 students have been diving into the fascinating world of orchestral conducting as part of their music curriculum. With batons in hand (or pencils, in some cases!), they’ve been exploring what it takes to lead an orchestra, understanding both the practical and creative responsibilities of the conductor.
Through a mixture of listening, watching, and hands-on activities, students have learned how conductors keep time, interpret a musical score, and communicate musical ideas to the ensemble.
One highlight of the lesson was the practical section, where students had the chance to step up and have a go and even Mrs Naylor joined in at one point!
Some students even expressed interest in conducting as a future career. After learning about the training and musical knowledge required, many were inspired by the idea of one day standing in front of a professional orchestra.
As the term wraps up, Year 7 have not only gained a deeper understanding of orchestral music but also developed greater appreciation for teamwork, listening, and leadership – all key skills for life, whether on the conductor’s podium or beyond.
