Year 7 Textiles
Our Year 7 students are now in their third Design & Technology rotation and are halfway through their Textiles project: designing and making a soft toy. They have already produced some wonderfully imaginative designs and are showing fantastic promise in their very first Textiles project at PGHS.
Year 8 Textiles
The current Year 8 group are making excellent progress with their bag‑making project. As shown in the photos, they have created repeat patterns using CAD, inspired by contemporary designers such as Aljoud Lootah and Yinka Ilori. These patterns have been printed onto fabric using the Heat Press to form the pockets for their bags.
Students are also learning about electronics in Textiles and have made small LED circuits that will be incorporated into their final designs. This project is giving them the opportunity to build a wide range of skills, including lots of hands‑on time using the sewing machines.
Year 9 Product Design
In Product Design, Year 9 students are developing and constructing a wooden puzzle or maze toy aimed at younger children. Using CAD software, they have carefully designed their maze layouts and will soon begin bringing them to life using equipment such as the scroll saw, belt sander, and a variety of hand tools.
Year 9 D&T Club Competition
Our dedicated Year 9 Textiles Club members have been working closely with Mrs Evans to create an entry for a competition run in partnership with BAE and #InspiringLancashire. The design brief asked students to “Design a prototype product that contributes to a more sustainable society and helps address climate change.”
The group has been incredibly inventive — as seen in the photos — recycling plastic themselves and then using the 3D printer to produce a working prototype. We can’t reveal too much yet, as judging is still to take place, but we are very proud of their hard work and creativity. Fingers crossed for a place in the final… watch this space!
