LUSoM

Lancaster University School of Mathematics (LUSOM) Online Courses

Last year, the Mathematics Department linked up with the newly opened Lancaster University School of Mathematics (LUSoM), which is part of Cardinal Newman College. Applications for current Year 11 pupils to apply here will open in October 2022. As a LUSoM student, pupils will study Maths and Further Maths for their first 2 subjects. Their third choice will be from the LUSoM selection of Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science. Owing to LUSoM’s link with Cardinal Newman College, all students will be able to select a 4th option from the Newman profile or another from the LUSoM subjects.

As part of our continuing links with LUSoM, there are a number of taster sessions and lectures, both online and on the campus that are currently, and will be, available for pupils.

Twilight Taster Evening

These sessions provide opportunities for Year 11 pupils to gain an insight into what studying at LUSoM will be like. There will be mini-taster lessons across Maths, Physics and Computer Science and a Q+A session. This is also an opportunity to find out about the content and delivery of the curriculum, the facilities available and the opportunities beyond A-level.

100% of pupils attending one of the tasters have agreed that the content covered supported a variety of topics supporting curriculum and agreed the session helped in deciding on whether to apply to LUSoM.

To book a session, please visit https://go.cardinalnewman.ac.uk/form/LUSoM-Twilight and select the date that you would like to attend.

LUSoM Lectures

This is a 12-week revision programme designed for Year 11 pupils aiming for grades 7 – 9 at GCSE. Starting in September, and meeting each week online, these sessions will go through various key topics to secure a top grade at GCSE and support the transition to A-level Mathematics.

These sessions received fantastic feedback last year with 96% of pupils agreeing they found the lectures very useful and 86% confirming the sessions were at the correct difficulty level. Each session will cover a different topic, and hence students should aim to attend all 12 sessions.

LUSoM Aim Further

Aim Further is new program, introduced this academic year. This 6-week intense program has been developed for Year 11 pupils planning to study Further Maths at A-Level. Meeting weekly both online and on campus, the sessions will focus on problem-solving questions which stretch and challenge pupils’ thinking skills. Using content familiar from GCSEs but in a new context, the sessions will aim to build the rigour of pupils’ arguments preparing them for the requirements of A-level Further Maths.

As each session will build on the previous weeks, LUSoM asks that pupils attend all the sessions to maximise the benefit of the course.

LUSoM Secure 7

Over 6 weeks, LUSoM invites Year 11 pupils who want to secure a Grade 7 in GCSE (which is the usual minimum requirement for A-level Maths) to join them and explore various GCSE-related topics. These sessions will deepen pupils’ understanding, support their revision, and prepare themselves for A-level Mathematics. The sessions will be held on the following dates:

DateTimeLocation
23rd February 20234.00pm – 5.00pmOnline
2nd March 20234.00pm – 5.00pmOnline

LUSoM Extend

This programme is designed for high-ability KS3/KS4 students who have a passion and interest for mathematics and want to go beyond their normal lessons. The sessions will cover material which is not on the GCSE syllabus and will show pupils some of the incredible uses that mathematics can have once it is taken at a higher level.

Meeting once per half term on campus, pupils will tackle mathematics in completely new contexts and so develop their problem-solving techniques and their breadth of mathematical knowledge.

The sessions will be held on the following dates:

DateTimeLocation
21st September 20225.00pm – 7.00pmOn Campus
23rd November 20225.00pm – 7.00pmOn Campus
