Inspiring Young Voices: A Year of Success in the Young Writers Competitions at PGHS

The English Department at Penwortham Girls’ High School is delighted to celebrate a year filled with creativity, imagination and literary achievement. Throughout the academic year, we have made it our mission to encourage students from every year group to take part in the Young Writers Competition and we’re proud to say that this effort has truly paid off.

From Year 7 through to Year 11, our students have risen to the challenge, submitting original poems, short stories and pieces of flash fiction. The entries have been as varied as they are impressive, showcasing a rich range of styles, voices, and ideas, from fantastical adventures and eerie thrillers to deeply personal reflections and powerful social commentary.

We are especially proud to share that a significant number of our students have had their work selected for publication, with their writing now featured in professionally published anthologies. This is a remarkable achievement and one that reflects the passion and talent that runs throughout our school community.

Encouraging students to write for pleasure has always been at the heart of what we do in English. Writing outside the classroom allows students to express themselves freely, explore their imagination, and gain confidence in their own voice. It strengthens communication skills, builds empathy, and helps young people make sense of the world around them. Above all, it reminds them that their thoughts and ideas matter.

As we reflect on the year, we would like to congratulate every student who took the time to enter. Whether your work was published or not, your willingness to put pen to paper and share your creativity is something to be proud of. You are all young writers and this is just the beginning.

Looking ahead, the English Department is excited to continue building on this success. With more competitions, clubs and creative opportunities planned for next year, we can’t wait to see what our students at Penwortham Girls’ High School will write next.

Well done to all our young writers.  Keep writing, keep imagining and continue to let your voice shine.
