Debate Club

Six of our talented Year 11 Debate Society students, Evie A, Emily G, Olivia H, Lily S, Evelyn W and Tia W, took part in the Rotary Speakers Competition at Balshaw’s High School this half term. Representing school in two confident and articulate teams, they delivered powerful speeches on topics they had chosen themselves: one exploring whether vaccines should be mandatory and the other examining how modelling in the 1960s contributed to eating disorders. Their passion and hard work shone throughout the evening and we are delighted to share that Lily S was awarded Best Speaker of the Evening. A wonderful achievement.  Well done to all involved!

On the 26th of November, Lucy, Alara and I went to the Great Lancashire Debate Finals in the Preston County Chambers to compete with 5 other schools. We had to prepare a presentation beforehand about one thing that we would add or change to benefit Lancashire. Our idea was to add a green café and community centre (the GCC) to Preston. In our presentation, we spoke about its uses, features and how it would benefit the community. We were then asked questions that we had to answer on the spot, which we did very well and impressed the judges. I was a highly commended speaker and we were a highly commended school! We all really enjoyed the day and are very grateful to have had the fantastic opportunity.

Muay Thai Event:

On Monday 10th of November, 3 women Muay Thai fighters joined us in school to provide all Year 9 students with a self-defense master class. The girls learnt lots of punching and kicking techniques was were even able to try them out on Mrs. Naylor whist she held one of the punch pads! We were so impressed by Alice from Johnsons Muay Thai, who is one of the top 10 Muay Thai fighters in the UK.

Year 8 and 9 Netball League Match Vs Leyland St Mary’s

On Monday 24th November, the Year 8 and 9 netball teams faced Leyland St Mary’s in the South Ribble Netball League in tough conditions, with cold weather and early darkness setting in. Both teams showed real determination from the outset, working hard to maintain intensity throughout the game. The Year 8s produced some strong attacking play and moments of excellent defense, but were unlucky to come away with an 18–13 loss after a close game. The Year 9s also gave a committed performance, demonstrating solid teamwork and resilience against tough opposition, eventually losing 16–6. Despite the results, every player put in maximum effort and continued to push until the final whistle. A great display of perseverance, sportsmanship and team spirit from both teams.

RE News

Year 7

Written by Ayra. K – Vice RE Subject Ambassador

As a judge for the R.E interfaith week project, I was part of the team tasked with choosing which symbol best represented ultimate respect for all religions. I was so impressed with the designs as they all put in a lot of thought and effort. The mobile had amazing interactive features and overall it was a very elegant, delicate piece.  The hat had a diverse selection of different symbols on it to help represent everyone equally, which was wonderful.  Finally, the heart was also interactive with important messages inside each individual box, such as the Golden Rule which really brings together people of different faiths today.

Well done to our everyone who took part and our top three winners!

Year 8

As part of the Judaism module, our Year 8 students have been exploring the issue of Anti-Semitism using The Windermere Children as a powerful case study. Three lessons were dedicated to studying the suffering experienced by Jewish people during the Holocaust. Their final project was to design a Holocaust Memorial that combined their knowledge of Jewish faith with their understanding of the Holocaust.  This enable them to create something that honoured those who suffered while also celebrating the resilience and dignity of the Jewish community. This project strongly reflected our school values of dignityand compassion—dignity in recognising the humanity of those who endured such hardship, and compassion in responding with empathy and a commitment to meaningful remembrance. We were incredibly impressed by the thoughtful, sensitive and creative memorials produced.  They demonstrated deep respect, emotional maturity and a sincere desire to honour and uplift the Jewish community.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to everyone celebrating!

Pen Pal Projects

In a world filled with instant messages and quick online chats, the simple act of writing a letter may seem old-fashioned but for students, having a pen pal can be a truly rewarding experience.

Since 2020, our international pen pal project has grown to include two partner schools in France; one in Germany and a school in Luxembourg, giving pupils a wonderful opportunity to connect across borders. Through exchanging letters, they not only develop their writing skills but also nurture a genuine curiosity about other countries, appreciating cultural differences along the way. They learn to practise patience and enjoy the excitement of receiving a reply.  Our Year 9 French classes sent paper houses again this year (some needed two extensions!) and loved receiving beautifully crafted paper houses back from their French pen pals. These ongoing exchanges continue to build confidence, broaden horizons and remind students of the joy that comes from meaningful, handwritten communication.
