South Ribble Cross Country Competition
The Under 16 South Ribble Cross Country Competition and the Under 14 Cross Country event took place last week on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
Despite the challenging conditions, with strong winds and persistent rain, our girls showed tremendous determination and resilience. They approached each race with confidence, adaptability, and a fantastic attitude, proving that they are ready to take on any weather.
Their hard work and commitment were clear to see and we are incredibly proud of the way they represented themselves and our school. A huge thank you to everyone who took part, supported the team and helped with the events. Well done to all runners!

As we approach the end of the Autumn term, we are delighted to share the fantastic progress our Year 7 students have made in Maths since joining us in September. Transitioning to secondary school is a big step and the girls have shown enthusiasm, resilience and a real willingness to challenge themselves.
Below is an overview of what they have been learning this term, along with the new skills introduced at secondary level.
🔢 Unit 1: Number Calculations
Based on Unit Plan: Number Calculations
Students strengthened their understanding of place value, rounding, decimals and written calculation methods.
New Learning at KS3
- Working confidently with negative numbers
- Using BIDMAS (order of operations)
- Rounding to decimal places and significant figures
- Long multiplication and division with larger numbers
- Calculating with decimals
- Using calculators for multi-step calculations
These skills are new to many students and essential for the algebra topics they will meet later this year.
🔶 Unit 2: Factors, Multiples and Primes
Based on Unit Plan: Factors, Multiples, Primes
Students explored the structure of numbers through factors, multiples, primes and square numbers.
New Learning at KS3
- Breaking numbers down using prime factorisation
- Finding HCF and LCM using prime factors
- Understanding infinite sets of numbers
- Cube numbers and cube roots
- Applying HCF and LCM in real-life problem-solving contexts
This unit encourages logical thinking and helps prepare students for future problem-solving work.
📏 Unit 3: Metric Units, Perimeter, Area & Volume
Based on Unit Plan: Perimeter, Area & Volume
Students have developed confidence with measurement, accuracy and 2D/3D geometry.
New Learning at KS3
- Using formulas to calculate the area of triangles
- Finding the area of parallelograms and trapeziums
- Calculating surface area
- Calculating the volume of cuboids
These topics extend primary understanding and build the foundations for more advanced geometry in Year 8.
💻 Sparx Maths – Weekly Homework
All Year 7 students now complete weekly homework through Sparx Maths, our personalised online homework system.
Each week includes:
- Compulsory tasks tailored to the student
- XP Boost tasks for fluency
- Optional Independent Learning for challenge
Students must show clear workings in their Sparx exercise books.
🌟 A Strong Start!
We are incredibly proud of how well our Year 7 students have adapted to the challenges of secondary maths. Their hard work and determination are already paying off, and we look forward to continuing this momentum into the spring term.

History Department News
Upon returning to school at the start of September, students in Year 9 have been engaging with the enquiry question ‘How different were the ideologies of inter-war Europe?’
This is a newly developed unit in the History Department and has allowed students to gain an understanding of some of the dominant political ideologies of the twentieth century, along with their specific geographical impact in Europe.
We began our investigation by considering the core features of communism and how they were applied in the Soviet Union, but subsequently looked at the impact of Anarchism in Spain, Nazism in Germany, Fascism in Italy, Pacificism in the United Kingdom, and Social Democracy in Scandinavia.
This unit has also allowed students to develop their understanding of Art History. Each lesson has seen us use paintings as sources of evidence, which can allow us to deepen our understanding of each ideology. For example, we have studied the use of Constructivist art in the Soviet Union, and the links between the Futurists and Italian Fascism.
Below are just a few examples of the excellent work Year 9 have produced during this scheme of work. Both myself and Mr Herbert have been deeply impressed by the analysis shown by our students. It is clear the year group has some budding Art Historians within it!

Caroline Lowton Cup Winners
This term, our school community has come together to celebrate one of the most important values we share: kindness.
In classrooms, corridors, and social spaces, acts of compassion—both big and small—have made a meaningful difference to the lives of students and staff.
To recognise those who go above and beyond to support others, we are proud to award the Caroline Lowton Cup of Kindness, a special trophy donated in memory of our much-loved former school nurse, Caroline Lowton.
Caroline was known for her warmth, empathy, and unwavering dedication to students’ wellbeing. This award is a tribute to her legacy and to the spirit she brought to our school.
This year, students were nominated by their peers—those who see firsthand the kindness that shines through when no one is watching.
We are delighted to congratulate one student from each year group whose actions have inspired others and strengthened our community.

Remembrance Sunday
On Remembrance Sunday students from Penwortham Girls’ High School took part in the ceremony held at Penwortham War Memorial. The Head Girl and two Deputy Head Girls, Lily T, Anna H and Isobel A, laid a wreath at Penwortham War Memorial on behalf of the school. They also read the names of those soldiers from the local area who lost their lives during the First World War alongside students from Priory Academy and All Hallows Catholic High School. It was fantastic to see so many students from school at the event braving the poor weather. On Armistice Day a recital of the Last Post by Mrs Little on the 20s corridor was followed by a two-minute silence observed by the school community.

Remembrance
This week, we held Remembrance assemblies to reflect and honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who have served.
On Tuesday 11th November, our school community paused for a two-minute silence together. The sound of the Last Post, beautifully performed by one of our music teachers, echoed through the corridors.
Some of our students also wore their service uniforms with pride as we reflected and remembered.
Odd Socks Day – Anti-bullying Week
On Monday, we came together to celebrate what makes each of us unique! Our differences are something to be proud of and together we can make our school a kinder, more inclusive place for everyone. A big thank-you to all the students and staff who took part and helped us stand united against bullying.
