🎃 Year 8 Shine in Spooktacular Pumpkin Decorating Competition! 🎃

The spirit of Halloween was alive and glowing this week as our Year 8 forms took part in a brilliant Pumpkin Decorating Competition — a creative idea organised and led by pupil Cara E!

Each form rose to the challenge with enthusiasm, transforming ordinary pumpkins into works of art. From spooky faces and film references to funny characters and imaginative themes, the designs showcased the incredible creativity and teamwork of our Year 8 students.

Teachers were amazed by the effort and originality on display. The judges Mr Ramsdale, Mr Ward and Mrs Hall had a tough time deciding the winner of this Spooktacular competition but in the end 8G came out on top!

A big well done to all the Year 8 forms for their fantastic creations, and an extra well done to Cara for her initiative, organisation, and Halloween spirit. What a wonderful way to celebrate the season! 🎃✨

On Wednesday 15th October 2025, Penwortham Girls’ High School proudly hosted its annual Aspirations Evening, a vibrant and inspiring event organised by our Careers Advisor, Shaheen Gul, and Careers Leader, Mr Ramsdale. Held from 4pm to 7pm, the evening welcomed over 200 families and featured more than 40 employers, university and college representatives.

Mr Ramsdale was particularly impressed by the quality of conversations taking place and the high level of engagement from both students and parents. “It was fantastic to see our students asking thoughtful questions and exploring their future options with such enthusiasm,” he said.

The evening received an average rating of 2.6 out of 3 from attendees, reflecting its success as an enjoyable and engaging experience for all involved. Feedback from students, parents, employers, and college representatives was overwhelmingly positive:-

  • “Great opportunity to meet Key Stage 4 students.”
  • “Great to speak to people at a young age.”
  • “Able to talk to the employers I wanted to meet.”
  • “Provide careers advice in construction / STEM roles.”
  • “There is a lot more to some jobs than you would think, and they can take you to different places.”

This event highlighted the ambition and curiosity of PGHS students and the strong partnerships the school continues to build with local and national organisations. We look forward to making next year’s Aspirations Evening even bigger and better!

Steel Manufacturer Visit

Our Year 10 students had a great morning visiting Leach Structural Steel Ltd on the 15th October. They saw firsthand where the steel for our new school building is being manufactured.

The Leach Steel factory school trip was such an amazing opportunity that I had the pleasure of enjoying with friends and teachers, where I got to learn about all the interesting pathways there are when it comes to the construction industry. The Leach staff members were so lovely and informative during the visit and I truly enjoyed learning all the possible careers including : Quality Surveyors, Steel Erectors, Designers, Estimators and more! The site was so awesome to tour and I’m so grateful I had the chance to see the place making the foundation of the new PGHS build, and even sign one of the beams that will be going into it! And thank you to our teachers who made the day full of laughs and fun!!

Science Club

It’s been a fantastic start to the year in Science Club! We’ve welcomed some enthusiastic new members and it’s been lovely to see our returning students back again now helping out, sharing their knowledge, and continuing to explore their love of science.

This term, we’ve already carried out some colourful flame tests, watching elements come to life in vibrant bursts of red, green and blue. We’ve also been busy taking care of our growing population of stick insects, which has now reached an impressive 36! Some students have even taken them home to care for, learning about their needs and how to look after living things responsibly.

Next up, we’ll be getting into the spooky spirit of the season with some Halloween-themed chromatography and a heart dissection, perfect for those who enjoy science with a bit of a scare!

A special shout-out to Harper E-W our resident stick insect expert for her fantastic help with them and for her incredible patience while counting every single one of them! Also, to Caitie S, who continues to come along and share her wonderful scientific discoveries after many years. It’s always a pleasure to hear about her findings and see her enthusiasm for science still going strong.

Science Club continues to be a place for curiosity, creativity and a shared sense of wonder about the world around us. We can’t wait to see what our young scientists discover next!

A New Era Begins at Penwortham Girls’ High School

Penwortham Girls’ High School is entering an exciting new chapter as construction of our brand-new school building gathers pace. The project, part of the Department for Education’s national School Rebuilding Programme, will replace our current school, which was built in 1954 with a sustainable, purpose-built environment designed for modern learning.

The three-storey, L-shaped building will feature a state-of-the-art sports hall, activity studios, dining and assembly halls, bright classrooms, and a welcoming new reception area. It will also include a modern library, new staff spaces, and innovative energy systems designed to make the building carbon neutral. Outdoor sports facilities and open green spaces will be retained and enhanced, creating a vibrant, environmentally responsible new school.

Following the successful ground-breaking ceremony in July, work is progressing well on site. Our next major milestone will be a special Steel Signing Ceremony on 22nd October, where students, staff, and guests will have the opportunity to leave their mark—literally—on the new school’s steel framework before it is enclosed.

Headteacher Mrs Sharon Hall said:

“This new building will transform opportunities for our students, but what makes Penwortham Girls so special – our values and ethos – will move with us. It will be a new home where compassion, resilience, and ambition continue to flourish.”

Construction will continue throughout the year, with completion expected by the end of 2026. We look forward to sharing further updates as our new school takes shape.
