Computing News

Key Stage 3 Computing

Year 7 students have started to investigate the use of a variety of programming codes ranging from ‘Scratch’ to ‘Python’.  In Year 7, the girls will be designing and creating their own game using Scratch. The game must have a healthy eating theme and will include a variety of scripts, sprites and variables. These games will be then evaluated and assessed. I am looking forward to seeing all the imaginative games and designs.

Year 8 students are building their knowledge about binary and will be exploring the world of programming by using Python. This will develop their knowledge from Year 7. The ultimate goal will be to create a mini quiz using Python.

Year 9 students are learning about advanced programming skills using Python. Students have started to recall their previous learning from Year 8 and will now move to more advanced programming skills by discovering functions and loops.

GCSE Computer Science

Computer Science is off to a great start this academic year. Year 11 have started to plan a variety of programs using different algorithms. They will be putting their planning into practice to ensure that they can code these programs successfully.

Year 10 have made a fantastic start to Computer Science. They have learnt about the CPU components and how the CPU works. We are currently learning about a variety of storage devices and how they operate.

 BTEC Creative Media Production

Year 10 media students have made a great start by learning about a variety of historical and contemporary media products. They have also acquired knowledge about media producers and their purpose. As the weeks progress, the students will select a media product and investigate this product in detail. They will look at the different audiences and the purposes of the product from script writing to camerawork.

Feature Artist: Irving Penn

This term, our ‘Feature Artist’ is internationally renowned photographer, Irving Penn. Irving Penn was one of the twentieth century’s great photographers, known for his arresting images and his masterful coverage of multiple genres.

At a time when photography was primarily understood as a means of communication, he approached it with an artist’s eye and expanded the creative potential of the medium, both in his professional and personal work.

The Irving Penn Foundation houses the largest repository of Irving Penn’s work and was established to promote knowledge and understanding of the artistic legacy of Irving Penn, including the diversity of techniques, mediums and subject matter that the artist explored.  Visit www.irvingpenn.org for more information.

Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl

Head Girl: Olivia S (Right), Deputy Head Girl: Lola U (Left)

My name is Olivia and I’m proud to represent Penwortham Girls’ High School as Head Girl. Joining Penwortham Girls’ in Year 7 and knowing no one, was extremely daunting, however, the warm and welcoming atmosphere provided by all staff and students allowed me to settle in instantly and have an amazing experience at this outstanding school. Our core values play a huge part in every school day, driving us to succeed both academically and personally. PGHS is also passionate about listening to the pupil voice, ensuring all students can have an impact on their school community. Finally, Penwortham Girls’ always motivate the students to fulfil their potential, helping them to become “articulate, questioning, tolerant and independent women for the future”.

Hello, my name is Lola and I have just been given the honour of becoming the new Deputy Head Girl at Penwortham Girls’ High School. Many girls in their transition from primary to secondary feel nervous and anxious to take on this big step, but I didn’t feel those nerves and instead, all I felt was excitement.  I couldn’t wait to become a part of the schools friendly and safe environment and finally become a PGHS student. I have never experienced a more welcoming environment.  The school has really helped me change from a shy little year 7 to a confident and enthusiastic student.  I feel honoured to represent such an outstanding school. It’s a school where teachers are always willing to help and encourage you to be the best version of yourself and push you to exceed not only academically, but personally too.  It is a school where you are free to be your true self and a community where it is impossible to not make friends. The school offers many opportunities for all students and these opportunities really allow students to become articulate, tolerant, independent, and questioning young women for the future. As my role as Deputy Head Girl, I hope to be a role model to the younger students and be the bridge between students and staff.  I wish to communicate ideas from the students to teachers and really expand on the school’s pupil voice. I’m looking forward to getting to know the new year 7s and the older students too.  Hearing their new suggestions for the school, I will always be willing to help. I have fully enjoyed every minute of my time at PGHS and I hope to spread positivity around the school, ensuring everybody also enjoys their time here at PGHS.
