An Introduction to our Travel and Tourism course

BTEC qualifications are designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. They have been developed to provide the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare learners for employment and/or to provide career development opportunities for those already in work.

These qualifications have been designed with the aim of preparing learners for progression into employment, further training or further education. Individual units have been designed to meet specific skills gaps identified by employers, these including locational geography, customer service and employability skills.

Student attainment is assessed through an external examination (25%) and the production of portfolio assignments (75%).

The majority of lessons are spent completing portfolio assignments. Each assignment has been designed to enable students to meet particular assessment criteria. These 'target' objectives are made clear to the students before the project is started. Each of the assignments has been placed in a vocational 'setting' providing pupils with experience of tackling 'real life' scenarios. Although a rough framework is clearly defined on the assignment brief, each project remains flexible; encouraging learners to be imaginative and innovative.

One lesson a fortnight is spent preparing for the external examination. This is sat in the January of Year 11 with a re-sit opportunity during the following June.
